[Woodang Issue Brief No. 1] Japan’s Suga Yoshihide Government and Korea-Japan Relations

2020.11.02

In this Issue Brief, Professor Jin-Gu Cho (Director of the Japan Center at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies, Kyungnam University) discusses the implications of Suga Yoshihide’s coming to power for South Korea-Japan relations. Prime Minister Suga acknowledges that South Korea is “a very important neighbor”, but the Japanese position that the resolution of current standing issues is a prerequisite for future cooperation remains unchanged. Noting that continuing conflict between the two countries goes against their common strategic interests and shared liberal values, Professor Cho suggests that policy-makers should make use of the current favorable circumstances to work towards remedying ties between South Korea and Japan.
