[International Conference] South Korea’s New Government and Korea-Japan Relations

CRCEA 2017.09.29

• Date: Friday, September 29, 2017, 13: 30-18: 00

• Venue: International Conference Room, Centennial Memorial Hall, Korea University

The situation surrounding the Korean peninsula, which the government of President Moon has entered, is very strict. The issue of the comfort women of the Japanese military, agreed upon at the time of President Park, still has not found a solution, and North Korea, which uses hedgehog survival strategies, is shaking international order with nuclear tests and continuous missile launches. In addition, China, which is unhappy with the THAAD deployment, is showing its toughness as a large country. In this situation, What is Japan like to us and what kind of relationship should we have?

Since 1945, the relationship between Korea and Japan has evolved through two large peaks. The first is the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan in 1965, and the second is the joint declaration of the new Korea-Japan Partnership in the 21st century in 1998. The era of “Hanil 1.0” was held when Park Chung-hee’s government, and was resolved through normalization of diplomatic relations. And President Kim Dae-Jung and Prime Minister Obuchi declared ‘Korea-Japan 2.0 era’.

Next year, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the declaration of Kim Dae Jung – Obuchi. Now, Korea and Japan are on the point of crossing the third peak. To prepare for the “Korea-Japan 3.0 era,” the Center for Reconciliation and Cooperation in East Asia(CRCE) of Peace and Democracy Institute held an international conference on the theme of “South Korea’s New Government and Korea-Japan Relations: Issues and Prospects.”
