[Citizen College Season 2] Penguin Flies: From Me Too Movement to Gender Equality Democracy
On November 16, 2018, the fifth lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The fifth speaker was Professor Moon Hee Song of PDI.
In this lecture titled “Penguin Fly: From Me Too Movement to Gender Equality Democracy”, the Professor explained the Me Too movement that was started by Prosecutor Ji Hyun Seo’s uncover, and talked with participants about the methods to make genders equal. Sexual harassment is the act of sexually humiliating other people with sexual remarks and actions in the areas of employment, work, and other relationships. Moreover, sexual abuse refers to sexual assault by intimidation. In other words, sexual problems occur in a totally unfriendly relationship, by harassing language or action. It is difficult to prove the sexual harassment or sexual abuse if two people were in a private space. The third person cannot be a witness easily due to the power structure and various interests. The essence of #MeToo is the ‘Gap-Eul Relationship’, and Me Too is a movement that started to face the problem of unjust sex power. The Professor claimed that both males and females could become victims of sexual harassment, so men and women should work together to combat sexual violence. (Summary: Eun-Bi Lee)
