[우당 해외학자 콜로키움] Prof. Kenneth Schultz

이번 콜로키움은 국제정치 분야에서 영토 분쟁과 전쟁 확산에 대한 연구를 진행해 오신 스탠포드 대학교 Kenneth Schultz 교수님을 모시고 진행되었습니다.

Kenneth Schultz 교수님은 국가 간 영토 정복이 이후 국제 질서와 분쟁 양상에 미치는 영향을 중심으로 연구해오신 학자로,
특히 정복(conquest)이 다른 국가들의 영토 확장 시도를 촉발하는 메커니즘을 이론적으로 구분하고 경험적으로 분석하는 데 중요한 학문적 기여를 해오셨습니다.

이번 강연에서는 러시아의 우크라이나 침공 사례를 계기로 제기된 “정복의 확산(contagion)” 가능성을 중심으로,
영토 정복이 이후 추가적인 영토 분쟁을 유발하는 세 가지 경로, 힘(power), 신뢰성(credibility), 규범(normative) 메커니즘을 비교·분석하였습니다.

또한 1816년부터 2014년까지의 역사적 데이터를 바탕으로, 실제로 어떤 메커니즘이 영토 분쟁 확산을 설명하는 데 유효했는지를 검토하고,
특히 제2차 세계대전 이후에는 이러한 확산 효과가 나타나지 않았다는 점을 통해 현대 국제 질서의 특징과 영토 분쟁 확산 가능성에 대해 살펴보는 시간이였습니다.

BIO : Kenneth A. Schultz is William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. His research examines international conflict and conflict resolution. He is the author of Democracy and Coercive Diplomacy and World Politics: Interests, Interactions, and Institutions (with David Lake and Jeffry Frieden), as well as numerous articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. He was the recipient the 2003 Karl Deutsch Award, given by the International Studies Association, and a 2025 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, awarded by Stanford University. He received his PhD in political science from Stanford University.
