[Citizen College Season 3] Democratic Civil Education in Europe after World War II

On October 25, 2019, the fifth lecture of the Citizen College Season 3 “Citizens and the World: Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Politics” was given at Korea University’s Political Science & Economics Bldg. 506, jointly conducted by the Seongbuk-gu Office and the Korea University Institute for Peace and Democracy. The fifth lecture was given by I. Alexandrova , a professor at the Institute for Peace and Democracy at Korea University. Titled “Democratic Civil Education in Europe After World War II,” it was time to look at the cases of civil education in Germany and France among European countries and talk about what civil education means in a democratic society. Civil education is a process that guides citizens to have the right citizenship as members of society, and it is an educational process that helps them to effectively participate in political and social systems and carry out their roles and responsibilities.⋯

[Citizen College Season 3] History conflict between Korea and Japan, how should we resolve it?

On October 11, 2019, the fourth lecture of the Citizens College Season 3 “Citizens and the World: Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Politics” was given at Korea University’s Political Science & Economics Bldg.101. The fourth lecture was given by a professor at the Institute for Peace and Democracy at Korea University. Titled “Korea-Japan historical conflicts, how should we resolve them?” the lecture looked at the public opinion of both Korea and Japan through poll data and looked at the reasons for the recent sharp deterioration in Korea-Japan relations. And it was time to think about the solution by referring to the examples of France and Germany. Prior to the Korea-Japan trade conflict in 2019, Korea and Japan had a generally favorable atmosphere through active cultural exchanges, and they had been active in economic exchanges while freely moving in and out of each other. On October 11, 2019, the third lecture of the Citizens’ University Season 3 “Citizens and the World: Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Politics” was given at Korea University’s Political Science & Economics Bldg. 101, co-hosted by the Seongbuk-gu Office and the Korea University Institute for Peace and Democracy. The third lecture was given by Professor Lee gyu-jung of the Institute for Peace and Democracy at Korea University. Under the title “Korea-Japan Conflict and Media,” the lecture was a brief overview of the recent developments in the Korea-Japan conflict and how Korean media understand and report on the conflict based on the general functions of the media. The Korean media’s reporting on the Korea-Japan conflict has shown a tendency for Korea to track down the cause of the conflict and to report relatively faithfully on the responses of the two governments and the private sector. On October 4, 2019, the second lecture of the Citizens College Season 3 “Citizens and the World: Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Politics” was given at Korea University’s Political Science & Economics Bldg. 101, jointly conducted by the Seongbuk-gu Office and the Korea University Institute for Peace and Democracy. The second lecture was given by Choi Chi-won, a professor at the Institute for Peace and Democracy at Korea University. Under the title of “Comparison Analysis between Germany and Japan on the Treatment of War Crimes,” it was a time to discuss the background of Nuremberg war crimes trials, progress, results, and the context of past clean-up issues and internal and external politics that are inseparable from trials, and to briefly look at the Tokyo war crimes trials. On September 28, 2019, Course of Citizen College Season 3 < the Citizens and the World: Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Politics > started at Korea University’s Political Science & Economics Bldg. 101, co-hosted by the Seongbuk-gu Office and the Korea University Institute for Peace and Democracy. The first class of the 12th class was held by Park Hong-gyu, a political science professor at Korea University. Under the title, “The Historical Origin of the Korea-Japan Conflict: Focused on the a land of gods Ideas,” the lecture was about examining the history of the current conflict between Korea and Japan on economic and security levels, and exploring the flow and characteristics of the land of gods, which is a major element of the conflict between Korea and Japan. The land of gods means a country of gods and has been used mainly to refer to Japan as its own. [Citizen College Season 2] The Spirit of Candlelight Revolution

On December 7, 2018, the final lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The last speaker was Professor Jung, Jai-Kwan of Korea University. In the lecture titled “The Spirit of Candlelight Revolution,” the professor and participants discussed the spirit of the people who joined the candlelight revolution and the meaning of the candlelight revolution in Korean society. In Korea, there was a large-scale peaceful demonstration from July 2016 to April 2017, and it is called a “candlelight protest.” However, the professor asked if we could call it a candlelight revolution. It’s usually defined as a revolution when the existing system changes through one instrument. Hence, It is hard to say whether the political, social and economic system of Korean society changed through the 23 times of candlelight⋯

[Citizen College Season 2] Urban Redevelopment and Gentrification

On November 30, 2018, the seventh lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The seventh speaker was Professor Gyu Jeong Lee of PDI. In the lecture titled “Urban Redevelopment and Gentrification,” the speaker explained what is gentrification and how it is happening in Korea. Gentrification is a phenomenon in which the quality of housing is enhanced by the middle class who entered the low-income residential area, and the social characteristics of the residential area are completely changed as the existing worker residents suffer involuntary migration. Though the original urban residential area had been changed in the past, the target of exclusion is diversifying these days. Especially, the gentrification is spreading from residents to merchant occupants such as commercial tenants. The process the gentrification is divided into five steps⋯

On November 23, 2018, the sixth lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The sixth speaker was Professor Sung-Woo Lee of PDI. In this lecture, titled “Minimum Wage Increase and Self-Employed Business,” the professor talked about income-driven growth and the relationship between the minimum wage and the self-employment. Wage-led growth aims to raise workers’ wages and encourage them to consume to achieve overall economic growth. Based on this, ‘Income-Driven Growth’ is the government’s economic policy that emphasizes wage increase and improvement of income distribution in various fields. In other words, the policy is aimed at a virtuous cycle in which income increases, consumer spending increases, and domestic production and investment increase. The minimum wage is the wage set by the government in order to guarantee the⋯

On November 16, 2018, the fifth lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The fifth speaker was Professor Moon Hee Song of PDI. In this lecture titled “Penguin Fly: From Me Too Movement to Gender Equality Democracy”, the Professor explained the Me Too movement that was started by Prosecutor Ji Hyun Seo’s uncover, and talked with participants about the methods to make genders equal. Sexual harassment is the act of sexually humiliating other people with sexual remarks and actions in the areas of employment, work, and other relationships. Moreover, sexual abuse refers to sexual assault by intimidation. In other words, sexual problems occur in a totally unfriendly relationship, by harassing language or action. On November 9, 2018, the fourth lecture of “Citizen College Season 2: Complex conflict and reconciliation of Korean Society” was held by the Seongbuk Village Citizenship Education Center and the Korea University Peace and Democracy Institute (PDI). The fourth speaker was Professor Nam-Kook Kim of Korea University. In this lecture, titled “Challenges of Multiculturalism and Acceptance of Refugees: Is the Border Control of the Nation-State Right?”, the Professor focused on various aspects of the Yemen refugee acceptance and the current situation about the problem. All those who submit the refugee applications are people willing to leave their own country and settle in a new country, whether they are voluntary or otherwise. But the problem is that the countries that they want to go do not easily open their borders. In this regard, laissez-faire does not consider all borders important and generous to refugees as long as they do not infringe⋯
