[KUPE Online Symposium #4] Social Change and Response in the Post COVID-19 Era

Due to Coronavirus Infection-19 (COVID-19, hereinafter referred to as Corona-19), a different world is unfolding in front of us in almost every field, including domestic and foreign politics, diplomacy, economy, society, and culture and arts. It is an important social responsibility of Korea University, which studies social science, to consider changes in international, national, and personal levels after the Corona-19 crisis, to respond to these changes, and to analyze and suggest policy alternatives. In this context, four research institutes, including the Peace and Democracy Institute, Institute of Economics Research, Institute of Statistics, and the Institute of Governmental Studies, sought to set up a common forum to discuss “change and response to our society in the post-corona era” and present analysis and policy alternatives from an inter-disciplinary perspective. A total of four symposiums were held in the 2020, and were broadcast live on YouTube Korea University’s Political Science and Economics University⋯

The Dawn of a National Democracy Movement: The Resistance to Donald Trump

Professor Sidney Tarrow is an emeritus professor of political science in Cornell University, and an inviting professor of the Cornell Law School. Also he is a prominent scholar in comparative politics for his works on social movements and political conflicts. The theme of the forum was “The Dawn of a National Democracy Movement: The Resistance to Donald Trump”. The speaker saw that Trump’s support base is more about his charisma than about policy, race, or nationality. That’s why Trumpism is a social movement, and the speaker said that Trump is the leader of the movement. Populism and Democratic Hybridization

• Date: November 26, 2018. 14:00~16:00 • Venue: 618, Political Science and Economics Bldg, Korea University • Presenter: Enrique Peruzzotti (Universidad Torcuato Di Tella)   On November 26, 2018, PDI invited Professor Enrique Peruzzoti of the Di Tella University (Department of Political Science and International Relations) in Argentina for the Peace and Democracy Forum. the topic of the forum was “Populism and democratic hybridization”. Presenter started the forum by explaining how to explain the global diffusion of populism. In the wake of the third wave of democracy and liberal democracy, populism has manifested its presence in the Americas and Europe. These days, populism is characterized by being executed at the government level by the democratic power which is elected beyond the social movement. He expressed this phenomenon as “democratic hybridization,” paying attention to the relevance of liberal democracy and populism.
