[Citizen College Season 6] #3 Sports and International Politics

On October 27, 2022, the Peace and Democracy Institute and the Seongbuk District Office held the third lecture of the Citizen College Season 6  “Politics in Everyday Life.”  In this lecture Dr. DongJoon Park, senior researcher at PDI, presented the topic of “Sports and International Politics.” Dr. Park talked about sports, soft power, and the global political implications of international sports competitions. Soft power is a means of persuasion, the ability to obtain through charm rather than coercion such things as money or power, and its constituent elements include culture and sports. In addition, sports competitions are used internationally as a means to show off the superiority and power of a state, to unite the nation, as a venue for diplomacy, and to improve the image of a nation. These effects were well demonstrated in the 1988 Seoul Olympics in Korea, the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China, and the 1964⋯

[Citizen College Season 6] #2 East Asian Nationalism and International Conflict

On October 20, 2022, the Peace and Democracy Institute and the Seongbuk District Office held the second lecture of the Citizen College Season 6  “Politics in Everyday Life.”  In this lecture Professor Jiyoung Ko from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Korea University discussed the topic of “East Asian Nationalism and International Conflict.” This lecture dealt with the concept of nationalism, as well as its traits and global political ramifications in Korea, China, and Japan. The distinction between “my people (Self)” and “other people (Others)” is fundamental for the development of nationalism, and nations create their own national identities by contrasting themselves with other nations. First, the nationalism that developed in China viewed Japan as the Other. This nationalism, initially promoted by the Chinese Communist Party, became internalized by the general public over time, resulting in amplifying conflicts with neighboring countries, especially Japan. [Citizen College Season 6] #1 Great Power Politics and the War in Ukraine: Implications for the International Order

On October 13, 2022, the Peace and Democracy Institute and the Seongbuk District Office opened Citizen College Season 6  “Politics in Everyday Life.” Professor Shin Wha Lee from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at  Korea University presented the first lecture titled “Great Power Politics and Russia-Ukraine War: Implications for the International Order.” The lecture addressed the rapid changes  in the international order in the twenty-first century as well as the future diplomatic and security plans that Korea should pursue. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, the COVID-19 pandemic shock, and US-China strategic rivalry have all contributed to uncertainty and instability in the current international order, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is raising a host of security concerns involving both traditional and non-traditional security.
