[Article] Growing uncertainty and inequality in the international community during the period of COVID-19… the solution ?

“The Korea Academic Council on the United Nations System will hold an academic conference on May 28th”  The Korea Academic Council of the United Nations System announced on the 25th that it will hold an academic conference on the “Uncertainty and Inequality in the International Society during the COVID-19 period” on the 28th. The opening statement will be done by president Lee Shin-hwa and the closing speech by Han Kyung-gu, Secretary-General of the Korean Committee for UNESCO. Due to the COVID-19 sanitary context, it will be held online. This conference was organized d to explore the role and cooperation between South Korea and the United Nations (UN) in the midst of changes and uncertainties in the regional security landscape around the Korean Peninsula due to COVID-19, and the threats that it causes to human security. The conference will address several subjects such as the US-China strategic competition during the COVID-19⋯

[Article] The Korean-Japan Parlimentarian Federation will hold a roundtable for journalists from both countries on the 1st

“Where is the solution to Korean-Japan relations?”  On May 1st, The Korean-Japan Parlementarian Federation (president Kim Jin-pyo, member of the Democratic Party of Korea) and the Center for Reconciliation and Cooperation in East Asia (director Park Hong-kyu) will co-host “a roundtable for journalists from both countries to seek solutions to Koreano-Japanse relations”. The event’s goal is to offer suggestions to both governments on how to improve the Koreano-Japanese relations based on President Moon Jae-in’s March 1st commemorative speech and the potential for changes in the future. “COVI19, infectious diseases, and deepening polarization within and between countries”  Experts predicted that COVID-19’s pandemic will call for a fundamental rethinking of the capitalist system. On the 17th, Kang Seong-jin, professor of economics at Korea University expressed his view on the subject during a seminar on “Responding to changes in Korean society in the post-Corona era”. [Article] Strategic competition for key currency between the US and China in the post-corona era

The strategic competition between the United States and China over key currencies is expected to become a hot topic in the post-corona period. Lee Yong-wook, professor of political science and diplomacy at Korea University expressed his point of view during a seminar on “Post-corona era Changes and Responses in Korean society: International Development and Finance” held at Korea University College of Political Sciences and Economics on December 1st. China has openly expressed its ambition to make the yuan a global key currency similar to the dollar. This means that the competition between the US and China for leadership on international currency will intensify after the COVID-19 period.  

[Article] [COVID-19] Chinese-style containment vs Korean-style quarantine… Necessity to wait a little longer to see which one is the most effective

Korea University’s College of Political Science and Economics held a symposium on the 18th. Discussions under the theme “Post-COVID-19 era Change and Response” on human rights, freedom, and privacy will be released later on YouTube. While Chinese’s authoritarian model and South Korea’s civic participation model are often compared in the process of containing the new coronavirus outbreak, experts point out the necessity of waiting a little longer to see which system works best. In other words, it is still too early to judge which one has the most effective quarantine between authoritarian governments such as China and Israel, and citizen’s voluntary participation in democratic countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. In addition, it has been argued that an institutional overhaul would be necessary to prevent the recurrence of various human rights violations that occurred during the domestic coronavirus quarantine process. Korea University’s College of Political Science and Economics will hold a symposium on the “Post-COVID-19 era” related to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. Lee Shin-hwa, professor of political science at Korea University stated that “it is a social responsibility to diagnose the changes at the international, national and personal levels in the post-COVID-19 era and to discuss future tasks at the level of Korea University, one of Korea’s leading universities.” She added that “we are planning an online symposium in order to have interdisciplinary collaboration.
