[Woodang Issue Brief No. 2] Who delivered Biden His Victory? Voting Behavior in the 2020 US Presidential Election

2020.12.20

In this issue brief, Professor Shang E. Ha (Professor of political science, Sogang University) analyzes which group of voters delivered Joe Biden his victory in the 2020 presidential election. Was it the white voters without college degrees or the racial minority populations? This is an important question because it will be difficult for the Democratic party to hold the support of both. Professor Ha analyzes exit poll results and the votes from Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona, the five most important states in the 2016 and 2020 elections, and concludes that the white voters in the swing states were the most crucial to Biden’s victory. While the inter-party differences between the moderates and progressives remain a considerable challenge, the future of the Democratic Party lies in the decision of which voters it will respond to.   You can download the full text of the issue brief (in Korean) here: [이슈브리프⋯

[Woodang Issue Brief No. 1] Japan’s Suga Yoshihide Government and Korea-Japan Relations

2020.11.02

In this Issue Brief, Professor Jin-Gu Cho (Director of the Japan Center at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies, Kyungnam University) discusses the implications of Suga Yoshihide’s coming to power for South Korea-Japan relations. Prime Minister Suga acknowledges that South Korea is “a very important neighbor”, but the Japanese position that the resolution of current standing issues is a prerequisite for future cooperation remains unchanged. Noting that continuing conflict between the two countries goes against their common strategic interests and shared liberal values, Professor Cho suggests that policy-makers should make use of the current favorable circumstances to work towards remedying ties between South Korea and Japan.
